Travelling consciously means ensuring that the accommodation you choose operates sustainably, and there are a wide range of accommodation options to choose from for your eco-vacation in the Indian Ocean.

Travelling sustainably does necessarily mean having to choose accommodation with only basic amenities (although foregoing luxuries and getting back to basics can be a great way to reduce your carbon footprint), you can select a luxury ‘green’ hotel, which supports initiatives to save the environment, such as using eco-friendly cleaning products, using water saving techniques and electricity saving devices or renewable energy and buying or growing local produce to use in the food they serve.

Other sustainable accommodation options include: Eco-lodges or tents, bed and breakfasts, self-catering apartments or studios, or you could stay in a village with a host family, or even find shelter in a tree house! Choosing locally owned and/or operated accommodation is also a more ethical choice as it helps benefit the local economy rather than increasing the profits of multinational conglomerates and their shareholders.

You also need to be aware that when you are choosing your accommodation type, that you are getting what you are expecting, for example, when you select a guest house in certain Indian Ocean destinations, it may not be what you think of as a guest house in Europe.
